Rec Services Staff Mourns the Loss of Hohnke

Robert Hohnke, who the staff at Recreational Services loving referred to as “German Rob” died Tuesday after a weather-related car accident near Farmington he was involved in last Friday.“We are all in shock over here at this terrible loss,” says Laura Montoya, public relations manager for Recreational Services Getaway program. “Rob was one of our family and loved by so many.”
Hohnke was on his way to Durango for a day of snowboarding with some friends, when his car was hit by a vehicle driving in the opposite direction that veered out of its lane. One of the other passengers in Hohnke’s car, Lauren Buerkkle, 24 was also taken to the hospital after the accident where she stabilized. Hohnke remained unresponsive and was removed from life support on Tuesday.
Hohnke taught swimming, jogging and weight training class at UNM and well-liked by his students and the staff at Recreational Services. “It is very sad in the center,” Montoya says.
In remembrance of their friend, lifeguards at Johnson Center are hosting “Pack the pool” this Saturday, Dec. 10 at 8 p.m. at the UNM Olympic Pool. People are encouraged to show up and get in the pool whether they plan to swim or just hang out where Hohnke used to do his workouts. The lifeguards are then headed to Kelly’s Brew Pub on Central for food and drink. Donations will being accepted to assist Hohnke’s mom who traveled from Germany to be with her son after the accident.
A memorial is also planned for Hohnke on Sunday, Dec. 11 at 11 a.m. in Johnson Center.
