UNM Hosts to Event to Honor Culture on January 20
January 11, 2017 - Dorene DiNaro
The University of New Mexico will host a free event, Honoring Culture: Advancing Social Justice, on Friday, Jan. 20 from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the SUB Atrium and Cornell Mall on the UNM campus. The event is a collaborative effort, lead by El Centro de la Raza in conjunction with various other UNM departments and programs.
“The goal is to provide a platform to openly discuss race, gender, class, and other social issues in a progressive, inclusive way,” says Rosa Isela Cervantes, director, El Centro de la Raza. “We are hoping that the event helps students know that we are listening to their voices and we care.”
The event kicks off with the presentation of a proclamation in honor of the event read by Dr. Eliseo “Cheo” Torres, Vice President for Student Affairs.
The rest of the day includes panel discussions with people with ties to various cultural and social justice events and movements. Dr. Lawrence Roybal, executive director for ENLACE Statewide Collaborative, will provide closing remarks and provide information on future events.
