The UNM administration has taken a measured and pragmatic approach to evaluating University operations over the past several weeks, and we have made every effort to clearly and effectively communicate about any decisions that are made, and to explain the rationale behind them. In consultation with UNM leadership, I have decided to extend the period of limited operations to May 16

If you need assistance from Student Affairs, you can leave a voice message now but there may be a delay to return your phone call. Sending an email to the specific Student Affairs staff that you need to contact will be the best method for communication. We will be checking emails throughout this timeline. Effective Tuesday, March 17 through April 30, UNM is implementing limited operations for our university, which will entail reducing the services offered and the number of employees physically present on UNM main campus. Therefore, the Office of Student Affairs will have limited staff in the office and will primarily be working remotely. ARC staff is working remotely Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Accommodations specialist are available remotely through email, Zoom and telephone.  Signed language interpreters are working as needed and preparing for online classes.  All services and accommodations are available for students with disabilities already registered with ARC.  Call 505-277-3506 or email with any questions.

College Enrichment and Outreach Programs

  • Short Term Loans (STLs) are still available to students through the DOS. These are being processed remotely. To apply for an STL contact or call 505-277-3361 for instructions on how to complete the application remotely. 
  • Center for Financial Capability has limited services offered during this time. CFC is temporarily hosting drop in hours on zoom. El Centro de la Raza

Lobo Food Pantry
The Lobo Food Pantry is ONLY hosting drive-up or walk-up services for students.  Drive-up and walk-up services are being offered on Mondays at 1:30 p.m. until supplies run out.  Students can pick up pre-made bags or boxes of groceries at the loading dock on the Northeast corner of the Student Advising and Enrichment Center (the same building where the campus pantry is housed).

Johnson Gym
Restricted Access beginning Thursday, March 19.  Only authorized UNM employees, who need to work within to continue operations online, will have access to Johnson Center.

Residence Life / Student Housing
All residents living on main campus in Alvarado, Coronado, Hokona, Laguna/DeVargas, Redondo Village Apartments, Santa Clara, SRC Apartments, and Casas del Rio should make plans to move off campus by Tuesday, March 24.  For additional information, visit Residence Life / Student Housing.

April 2, 2020 Update from Children's Campus

The Children's Campus has made the difficult decision to extend the current closure for all families through the remainder of the academic semester. This was by no means an easy decision, but at the end of the day, the health and well-being of each and every member of our Children’s Campus community come first.

March 20, 2020 Message UNM Children's Campus

The UNM Children's Campus has closely been monitoring the developments of the COVID-19 situation in the State of New Mexico. In discussion with UNM Leadership, it has been determined that the UNM Children's Campus will be closing temporarily to families beginning today, March 20, 2020 and extending through April 5, 2020. The UNMCC Leadership Team will continue to work and be available during this time. 

As always, keeping our community healthy and safe is a top priority. We will continue to closely monitor the reports and recommendations from University Leadership, the CDC, National Association fo the Education of Young Children, and the State of New Mexico Child Care Licensing to ensure that we do everything we can during this rapidly chaning situation. Staff will reach out to families individually to keep them apprised of updates as they are received. March 19 Message from President Stokes

ood morning.

First, I hope you and your families are safe during this unsettling time in our state, nation and world. As Lobos we like to say ‘each of us defines all of us’ – and that has never been more true than it is right now. Although we are all striving to maintain social distance, we also still have a social responsibility to remain calm during chaos, adaptable during change, and united during times of uncertainty.

Yesterday, Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham announced a series of Executive Orders that have gone into effect today, Thursday, March 19, 2020. The governor’s directives require the closure of all malls, movie theaters and gyms, and limit all restaurants to take-out or delivery only. Governor Lujan Grisham has also directed anyone traveling into New Mexico to self-isolate for 14 days. Similarly, Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller has declared a local public health emergency – allowing the city more access to funding for COVID-19 response and resources.

These state and local measures are being taken to further encourage the social distancing necessary to slow the spread of COVID-19 and to keep our health care system from becoming overwhelmed. 

In these extraordinary times, extraordinary measures must be taken to safeguard our university community and maintain our educational mission. 

While UNM remains open for business, most services, including classes, will now only be offered remotely using online technology. Given the scope of this disease and its progression, it is not realistic to hope that we will be able to come together in large groups, including traditional in-person classes, after our current period of limited operations. Therefore, courses will move online on a rolling basis to the fullest extent possible beginning Monday, March 23. In-person group educational experiences will have to be replaced with other forms or eliminated. We are committed to ensuring that every student approaching graduation will graduate, and we are committed to ensuring that any course that must be truncated will receive academic credit.

I am also further restricting access to a number of our buildings on our Albuquerque and branch campuses, including the Health Sciences Center (HSC). Until further notice, Johnson Gym and the Student Union Building will have access restricted to those employees who need to work within them to continue operations online. Zimmerman Library and other main campus and HSC library spaces are similarly restricted; a very full set of library services remain available online. The Dane Smith Hall facility will be available for students needing computer access. UNM will also be restricting access to classrooms. We will be working to reduce the number of students in on-campus housing, and campus food options will be limited to La Posada and the SRC Market for takeout only. Due to limited operations and the reduced number of personnel on site, most HSC buildings will be badge or key entry access only. If you should accidentally be locked out of your building and do not have someone to call to let you in, please contact UNM Police at (505) 277-2241.

Again, I should emphasize that UNM is not closing. We will continue striving to create a safe and healthy place for our students to learn, innovate and achieve, while shifting our focus to further developing and refining virtual learning environments and services. 

There is no doubt these actions will prompt many questions, especially for our students. Please be assured that my leadership team and I are working hard to get you the answers and guidance you need as quickly and as accurately as possible. Further information regarding housing and classes will be sent to students shortly. Please also continue checking the University’s designated COVID-19 website for those updates and more information as it becomes available.

I can’t overemphasize my gratitude to all of you for your patience and community spirit, and for adapting so quickly during this unprecedented and ever-changing situation. A special thanks to our health care workers, custodians, police and front-line staff who continue to maintain a strong physical presence at the University for protecting the health and safety of our community and supporting the mission of the University.
