Mezquite Golf Tournament Benefits UNM Students for 4th Year
August 22, 2012 - Dorene DiNaro
For the 4th consecutive year, the UNM Division of Student Affairs has teamed up with businessman and owner of El Mezquite Markets, Sergio Bermudez (pictured 3rd from left), to host an annual Mezquite Golf Tournament to raise funds for scholarships for UNM students. Just like last year, additional funds for the scholarship have come from the Mexican Consulate of Albuquerque’s office.
"We are grateful for the generosity of Sergio, who brought together a number of donors to contribute to a worthy cause,” says Dr. Eliseo “Cheo” Torres, Vice President for Student Affairs. “I would also like to thank Consul Mauricio Ibarra Ponce de León, for matching the total amount of scholarship funds generated by the golf tournament.”
To date the tournament has raised close to $100,000, and helped over 100 recipients take another step toward their higher education goals.
“Being a recipient of the IME/El Mezquite Scholarship allowed me the opportunity to conclude my undergraduate studies,” says Alejandro Mendiaz-Rivera, one of the scholarship recipients. “I didn't have the Lottery Scholarship my last semester so I'm not sure how I would have been able to afford my tuition.”
Scholarship applications will be available in September of this year and will be awarded in November. This year, the plan is to award 52 scholarships of $2,000 each. Each recipients will receive $1,000 in the fall and $1,000 in the spring.
“Receiving the scholarship allows many students to take a load off their shoulders by being able to work less and concentrate more on study time,” Mendiaz-Rivera says. “I'm glad there are so many sponsors that care about their community and are willing to make a commitment to students and education.”
