Mental Health Screening Day 2012

October 20, 2012 - Dorene DiNaro

Student Health & Counseling (SHAC) will offer free mental health screenings for students on Tuesday, Oct. 30 at SHAC (outside SHAC’s west entrance) from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.  Students can complete a written self-assessment and meet one-on-one with a mental health professional. Those who appear to need further evaluation will be referred to local services.

This is an easy way to learn more about your mental health. Screenings provide a free, anonymous, simple option. Whether for depression or another mental health issue, a screening will help you to understand your state of mind and whether it might be wise to seek further help.

A screening test is not a substitute for a complete evaluation, but it can help you learn if your symptoms are consistent with anxiety disorder, bipolar disorder, depression, eating disorder, or post-traumatic stress disorder. Free, anonymous screenings are also available online at http://shac.unm.edu/selfhelptools.htm.
