UNM CEP Student Wins STN Student of the Year Honor
April 9, 2015 - Dorene DiNaro
The Student Television Network (STN) recently recognized Gabe Gallegos, a UNM College Enrichment Program (CEP) freshman double-majoring in strategic communication and political science, and newly elected ASUNM senator, as the national Student of the Year for his work as a journalist last year at Las Cruces High School. Gallegos says he was humbled to receive this honor from an organization considered the “top dog” for all of high school television broadcasting.
As part of that honor, Gallegos gave a keynote address to almost 3,000 students, teachers, and media professionals at the organization’s national conference in San Diego last week. “It was an awesome experience because I felt like I was able to inspire the conference attendees which included high school and middle school students, teachers and professors,” Gallegos says. “The fact that a small town kid from Las Cruces could have an impact was very powerful for me.”
Gallegos has known since the 8th grade that he wanted to work in the media profession, and he says that receiving the award was a culmination of all his hard work. As for his inspiration, he says that he wouldn't’t be who he is currently with his mom. “Where I come from and my culture propelled me to where I am today,” he says.
The convention marked the end of his one-year term as emissary for the Student Television Network—a prestigious honor in which he was also able to represent the University of New Mexico and our state. “I got to encourage high school and middle school students to think of broadcasting and journalism as a mechanism for social change for doing big things, cool things.”
Gallegos says he will use this opportunity to get his name out there and try to find more opportunities towards his education and future career goals. He also extends his gratitude to the College Enrichment Program, which he says contributes in part to his success, “In this year with the program, I have been connected in ways I never would have been able to otherwise,” he says. “CEP has connected me with key mentors and even helped me become a campus tour guide.”
