UNM Educational Opportunity Center Selected as Guest of Honor at YDI Graduation Ceremony

June 29, 2015 - Dorene DiNAro

The UNM Educational Opportunity Center (EOC) has been chosen as this year’s Youth Development Inc. (YDI) Guest of Honor and will be recognized for their dedication to YDI’s GED students with a plaque at their 2015 GED Graduation Ceremony on Tuesday, June 30 at 3 p.m. at the National Hispanic Cultural Center in the ABQ Journal Theater.  The event is free and open to the public.

For the last several years, the EOC has been working with YDI GED Programs, to help students make the transition to college.  EOC advisors provide help with applications for both college and financial aid including the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and other scholarships through one-on-one advisement sessions. Advisors also help guide students through the college enrollment process by explaining the steps necessary to be fully admitted to college, providing referrals, and connecting them to other student support programs designed to help students achieve their educational goals.  EOC has also supported YDI students through GED exam vouchers, as a way to eliminate financial barriers that might prevent them from obtaining a high school equivalency diploma.

In a letter to Marcial Martínez, Director-Program Specialist, Educational Opportunity Center, College Enrichment and Outreach Programs, YDI Vice President Concha Cordova, thanked EOC for their partnership and recognized their hard work and dedication to ensuring YDI students make a successful transition from GED to post-secondary education

“On behalf of EOC advisors, Jenny Quiñonez-Mba and Sergio Leaños I greatly appreciate YDI’s cordiality over the last several years for allowing us to help their students advance their education as well as all the good deeds and support that the entire staff have demonstrated to EOC,” Martinez says.  “We are truly honored to receive this award, since it represents the result of many years of working together for the well-being of all the students who have participated in the various YDI programs and who also have become EOC participants.”

The Educational Opportunity Center (EOC) is a TRiO Program funded 100% through a grant from the U.S. Department of Education at $221,178.00 annually under the Higher Education Act of 1965 Title IV, Part A, Subpart 2.
