UNM Student Health and Counseling to Offer Free Mental Health Screenings
October 3, 2016 - Dorene DiNaro
UNM Student Health & Counseling (SHAC) will offer free mental health screenings for UNM students on Thursday, Oct. 20 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at SHAC on Main Campus and at the UNM Law School on North Campus.
Students complete a written self-assessment and meet one-on-one with a mental health professional. Those who appear to need further evaluation will be referred to local services.
Whether for depression or another mental health issue, a screening helps you to understand your state of mind and whether it might be wise to seek further help.
Note: A screening test is not a substitute for a complete evaluation, but it can help you learn if your symptoms are consistent with anxiety disorder, bipolar disorder, depression, eating disorder or post-traumatic stress disorder. Free, anonymous screenings are also available on the SHAC website.
If you haven’t been feeling like yourself lately, a simple, confidential questionnaire can determine what is wrong and what you can do. For information, call SHAC Counseling Services at (505) 277-3136.
