BeKind UNM, Student Affairs, the Division for Equity and Inclusion and Office of Equal Opportunity Team Up for Kindness
November 17, 2016 - Dorene DiNaro
BeKind UNM and Student Affairs teamed up with the Division for Equity and Inclusion, the Office of Equal Opportunity, and several other departments and programs to provide a Kindness Corner this week.
The goal of the two-hour “open house” event was to encourage the UNM community to promote kindness and respect on our campus. The event also served as a way to promote campus support services and resources for those who may need them. During the events students and staff were treated to free goodies including t-shirts, BeKind UNM pins and magnets, and random food goodies and a listening ear if they needed it.
UNM Student Health and Counseling offers counseling services for students who need them, and all three of the UNM Ethnic Centers: African American Student Services, American Indian Student Services, and El Centro de la Raza; the Women’s Resource Center, the Dean of Students Office, and the College Enrichment and Outreach Programs, as well as the LGBTQ Resource Center, Division for Equity and Inclusion, and the Office of Equal Opportunity provide a safe space for students to talk about their emotions and be themselves.
The Division of Student Affairs supports those who are struggling with a wide range of legitimate emotional reactions and we continue our commitment to support for students who need to talk, are seeking counseling, or a space to feel safe in,” says Dr. Eliseo “Cheo” Torres, vice president for Student Affairs. “We are here to support students.”
“The ultimate goal is for every member of the UNM community to feel safe and valued on our campus,” says Dr. Kim Kloeppel, Chief Operations Officer for Student Affairs. “Every act of kindness goes a long way in making the University of New Mexico a welcoming place for all students.”
The Counseling and Reporting Services for Students webpage has been set up on the Student Affairs website as a central location for students. Please visit the Student Affairs webpage for more information, on any of the departments or services offered in our Division.
