Wallace Named Director of Student Union
February 24, 2020 - Dorene DiNaro
Cheryl Wallace will be taking over the helm as the permanent director of the UNM Student Union on Monday, March 1. Wallace who has been at The University of New Mexico for the last 24 years, most recently served as the SUB’s interim director following the retirement of Dr. Walt Miller last year.
Throughout her tenure at UNM, Wallace has worked in General Accounting, Enrollment Management, and Student Affairs. She spent the past ten years working in the Union in various capacities where she supported all areas of operations.
Her favorite part of all has been being in the SUB and working with students. “There’s always something happening at the SUB,” she says. “It’s like the hub of campus and keeps me connected to students and programs.”
Part of that connection is serving as a mentor to many of the student employees who work in the SUB. “We usually have at least 50 student employees who work as everything from facilities to building managers,” she says.
Wallace recently expanded the graduate program in the SUB to include additional leadership roles and collaborations with management on project and daily operations to help students grow in their academic and professional careers.
Her goals for this new position are to add more programs and partner with departments to further enhance the student experience. Part of the process includes “re-branding” the SUB to align with the University’s branding standards. “We are adding more cherry and silver paint to the building to update the look and feel of the place,” she says.
The SUB's main source of revenue is SFRB funding. With reduced fees, Wallace are looking to increase its external revenue by soliciting more business both inside and outside of the University. She has hosted customer appreciation events and pursued other avenues to make that happen.
