Career Services Hosts Virtual Career Events

April 6, 2020 - Dorene DiNaro

handshake_chairEach year during April, you can count on two big career fairs taking place on The University of New Mexico campus—the Educator’s Job Fair, and the Student Job and Internship Fair. These fairs are a great way for job seekers to meet with recruiters from local and national educational institutions and business corporations, as well as UNM departments and programs.

This year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, most UNM departments and programs, including Career Services are finding creative ways at keeping Lobos informed.

Dr. Jenna Crabb, director of UNM Career Services, and her staff are partnering with employers to offer virtual career events with 19 organizations via the Handshake database at https://unm.joinhandshake.com/login.

“In unprecedented times like these, we are trying to find ways our employers can still meet and hire our students for their organizational needs.  We have many organizations still needing to hire and fill open positions.  We want to make sure our students are getting connected to employers in any way possible. This includes looking at creative ways to virtually connect with our employer partners.”

The UNM Handshake database is available to all students, alumni, faculty, staff and community members who register via the unm.joinhandshake.com website and view the database.  All that is required is to log on to unm.joinhandshake.com using your UNM email and you will automatically be approved.  From there, you can create your profile and start to look at related opportunities and events to connect to over 11,000 employers.

“Connecting with our employers is incredibly important during this time of uncertainty for both our students and our employers.  We, in Career Services, want to make sure we are providing every opportunity we can to meet the needs of both our UNM community and our employer partners.  We have to be creative in finding ways help our students find these jobs and internship opportunities while also helping our employers find our talented and competitive students.

The database has over 8,000 jobs and internships and over 11,000 local, national, and international employers looking to hire UNM Lobos. The Handshake platform allows UNM students and alumni to apply for jobs and internships. In addition, students and alumni can research employers and RSVP for upcoming events and career fairs held at UNM.

Crabb says that Career Services is committed to serving their UNM community through virtual options including phone or video appointment scheduling via 505-277-2531, and/or email at onlinecareerservices@unm.edu.  Please visit Career Services website for more information.
