A Statement from Dr. Eliseo "Cheo" Torres

June 9, 2020 - Dorene DiNaro

The Division of Student Affairs provides access, support, and encouragement to all students in pursuit of academic excellence in the University of New Mexico’s diverse community.  As a Division, we stand united with our Black Lobos and their efforts to end Anti-Black violence.  Over the past week, when we have seen increased racial tension throughout the nation and our community, as a University we have been pleased to see students, faculty, and staff, positively respond and question ways in which we can improve diversity on the UNM campus.

We are home to support services for students from diverse ethnic backgrounds.  We realize that now more than ever critical reflection and engagement is so important as we build inclusive partnerships, programs, facilities and services, build leadership, and enrich academic and career goals, and enhance the quality of life for potential and current students, and alumni.

We know that campus climate matters and that we cannot achieve racial equality without first understanding racial realities.  And, we know that actions matter more than declarations and as scholars we need to focus on campus racial climate in an effort to ensure that all college students feel welcomed and supported. We know that members UNM community should feel hopeful to overcoming the racial barriers to create truly inclusive environments.

The Division of Student Affairs is committed to examining where we can improve in delivering opportunities for students that are inclusive both in programming and marketing and we encourage our larger university community to do the same. We will continue to learn more about how we can disrupt unconscious bias so that we create a community where truly all students can thrive academically.

Lobos, we see you, we hear you, and we stand with you.
