The mission of African American Student Services is to recruit, retain, and uplift the Black student population at UNM by providing educational discourse, leadership development, holistic wellness, and community engagement. We support students in realizing their full potential self through collaborative advocacy, intentional allyships, and the exploration of the many facets of Blackness. As an essential resource, AASS contributes to the University’s commitment to a diverse campus culture by appreciating and creating space for Black student scholars to thrive.
The vision of African American Student Services “Afro” is to inspire excellence in culture, research, and innovation for Black student scholars at the University of New Mexico.
Founded in 1889, The University of New Mexico sits on the traditional homelands of the Pueblo of Sandia. The original peoples of New Mexico – Pueblo, Navajo, and Apache – since time immemorial, have deep connections to the land and have made significant contributions to the broader community statewide. We honor the land itself and those who remain stewards of this land throughout the generations and also acknowledge our committed relationship to Indigenous peoples. We gratefully recognize our history.
American Indian Student Services (AISS) was established during the 1980-1981 academic year to increase the recruitment & retention of Native students. Currently, American Indian Student Services provides a range of student support programming for American Indian students attending The University of New Mexico-Main Campus in an effort to ensure their academic achievement and assist in the development of personal, cultural, and social success. AISS is also a liaison for Native students attending local high schools and schools located on or near tribal reservations; tribal and community colleges; tribal governments; and tribal higher education programs and organizations that directly impact the recruitment and retention of American Indian students at The University of New Mexico-Main Campus. All students are welcome!

The College Enrichment Program (CEP) provides programs that directly impact students’ success at UNM. CEP provides comprehensive student support services that assist students with their transition to higher education and attaining collegiate success. Programs focus on students who are 1st Generation, Low Income, and/or are from Rural Areas. We truly BELIEVE all students have the ability to succeed and we sincerely CARE about their success! We pride ourselves on meeting.
Community Engagement Center (CEC) was formed in 2000 by faculty, staff and students, and community members interested in better mobilizing the University of New Mexico’s resources and talents towards ever increasing civic engagement. CEC now serves the entire campus and the state of New Mexico.
In a very short time, CEC has come to act as an academic partnership and policy center for communities, neighborhoods, and villages striving to implement more community-driven learning projects for their children, youth and families. In order to support this work, CEC operates as a campus wide linking resource office for more effectively bringing students, faculty, academic units, communities and citizens together to participate in shared learning and community problem solving.
Much of these interactions are conducted between communities, neighborhoods, large public institutions (school, public agencies), and governmental systems (local, tribal, state and federal). CEC’s basic practice is to create spaces where university faculty, students and staff can listen, dialog, and learn with and from children and youth, parents, community members, teachers, and agency representatives. Community partners then identify and document needs and opportunities, and go onto conceptualize and implement imaginative community learning plans—plans that utilize the entire community as a rich context for learning and community improvement. CEC supports and facilitates this mutual community learning process.
In its policy center role, CEC primarily focuses on youth matters, leadership for community capacity building, local community projects and inter-governmental or institutional collaboration. CEC assists community members, leaders and institutional representatives to conduct needs and asset assessments, plan programs, develop youth/adult partnerships, and then provides technical assistance and learning supports designed to articulate community-learning agendas.

El Centro de la Raza stands as a testament to the vibrant Chicano movement of the 1960’s. Its inspiring history is deeply rooted in student empowerment. Initially brought to life by passionate students, El Centro quickly emerged as a vital force, ensuring that the University of New Mexico addresses the unique needs of its largest and most rapidly growing ethnic population.
In 1994, El Centro achieved a significant milestone by securing its first special project state funding, a step that, alongside dedicated student advocacy and community support, ultimately led to the organization's renaming in 1995 as El Centro de la Raza. This change reaffirmed its core mission: to serve the Chicano/Nuevo Mexicano/Latina/o/x student population in reaching their goals in higher education and beyond.
Over the years, El Centro has undergone many transitions in order to keep up with student needs. These changes have included the renaming of the center, the development of specific programming, and now offering co-curricular initiatives, all with the intent of serving the Chicano/Nuevo Mexicano/Latina/o/x student population who are still faced with significant obstacles in higher education.
Today, El Centro continues its unwavering commitment to the holistic well-being of its students. It prioritizes student advocacy, offering exceptional programs and services while educating the broader campus community about the diverse issues affecting Latino/Hispano students at UNM. El Centro's impact extends beyond academics; it touches lives through mentoring, recruitment efforts, cultural programming, civic engagement, advocacy, student internships, professional development, and emergency scholarships. Your support contributes to the legacy of El Centro de la Raza, shaping the leaders of tomorrow and ensuring that they have the resources and advocacy required to succeed.
Join us in this vital mission. Stand with El Centro de la Raza today!
Thank you for helping us empower the future of our students and community!
