After a competitive nationwide search, Dennis-Ray Armijo, has been named director of the Student Union Building (SUB) at The University of New Mexico. Armijo will take over the helm on July 1 upon the retirement of current director, Cheryl Wallace.

A two-time Lobo, Armijo earned his master’s degree in Public Administration and bachelor’s degree in International Studies from UNM. His time at the SUB began as a work-study student in 2008, and he subsequently went on to hold several roles including professional operations intern, program coordinator, operations manager, and most recently, associate director.

As associate director, Armijo was responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the facility, and interacting with various internal and external constituencies. He has ensured the facility is always at its best for students, staff, faculty, and campus visitors.

Armijo was also instrumental in the installment of a mural honoring the Indigenous Peoples’ Land and Territory Acknowledgement on the wall outside of the building’s ballrooms—a project he’s particularly proud of.

Dr. Eric Scott, vice president for Student Affairs, recognized Armijo’s dedication to enhancing the student experience at UNM through programming and services that foster an inclusive community.

“Dennis brings important expertise regarding the many facets of the SUB to the director position, as well as a deep understanding of New Mexico’s distinct culture,” said Scott. “Dennis will be able to build upon the advancements made under Cheryl’s leadership that will enhance the vibrancy of our campus.”

Armijo said he is excited and honored for the opportunity to serve as SUB director. “Back in 2008, as a first-generation student starting my journey as a work-study, I never imagined I'd one day hold the role of director,” he said. “I am thankful for Cheryl and her mentorship which has helped me prepare for this opportunity.”

Dr. Jenna Crabb, executive director for Student Resources, is enthusiastic about his continued tenure at the SUB. “Dennis will continue to bring his passion and collaborative spirit to the SUB, the students, and the staff in the director position,” she said. “Dennis has a lot of great ideas, vision, and initiatives, that I look forward to seeing develop in his new role. I know he will do a great job and continue to meet the growing needs of the SUB.”

And, while Armijo looks forward to the continued partnerships and building more of those relationships across campus, he also plans to bring new concepts to the SUB.

“I have some ideas and plans to continue improving the space within the SUB for the students of the university,” he said. “I look forward to the upcoming semester and tackling it with the amazing SUB staff.”
