New Mexico Governor, Michelle Lujan Grisham and Secretary of State, Maggie Toulouse Oliver, recently officially proclaimed November as National Career Development Month. Marty Apodaca, LPCC-S, CCC, NCC, career counseling manager for UNM Career Services, and current president for the National Career Development Association (NCDA), wrote and submitted the proclamation as a way to amplify the mission and honor the essential contributions of career development professionals from across our state—something he does in his daily work through UNM Career Services.
Apodaca said the commitment of Career Services staff not only strengthens individual professions but also empowers the residents of New Mexico through meaningful career advancement opportunities. In his current role, he and his colleagues guide students on their career development path—a lifelong journey of prioritizing goals, values, interests, and long-term growth.
“The work we do at Career Services is, at its core, social justice and advocacy,” Apodaca said. “Ensuring access to fair-paying jobs, worker protections, and fulfilling careers empowers individuals to become the author of their career story.”
UNM Career Services staff support students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community members in making informed career, educational, and employment decisions through comprehensive services tailored to meet individuals wherever they are in their career development process.
“We emphasize the importance of continuous learning, skill development, and expanding knowledge to foster a strong, resilient workforce,” he said. This commitment not only strengthens individual professions but also empowers the residents of New Mexico through meaningful career advancement opportunities.”
From the moment students enter The University of New Mexico, Career Services provides guidance on career exploration, major selection, and aligning academic interests with career goals. Students also receive assistance with internship and externship placements, skill development, and applying academic learning to professional roles throughout their academic journey.
“Our career development professionals are committed to staying informed about evolving workforce trends, economic forecasts, and industry changes,” said Dr. Jenna Crabb, executive director for student resources and acting director for Career Services. “Supporting our students in their career journeys and helping them achieve their goals has always been at the heart of our mission. The state proclamation underscores the significance of our work and reflects our ongoing dedication to the people of New Mexico, as well as to the students, faculty, and staff of the University of New Mexico.”
