First Gen Proud Celebration
November 5, 2024 - Dorene DiNaro
Did you know that nearly half of the student body at the University of New Mexico are first-generation students? While the definition of first-generation varies—a student with neither parent having received a four-year degree—they are trailblazers, go-getters, and are First-Gen Proud!
Their educational journey is not just about personal achievement; it’s about transforming the lives of their families, communities, and the world around them. These students represent the future educators, decision makers, school board members, and community leaders who will strengthen our democracy, improve our schools, and build resilient households. Their impact extends far beyond the classroom, and they are essential to building a better future for us all.
At UNM, our promise is to make every first-generation student feel seen, supported, and celebrated. First-generation students are the backbone of our University and are role models not only for their peers but also for the next generation of first-generation students who will follow in their footsteps.
Join President Stokes, Vice President Scott, & Other First-Gen Proud Lobos at the Celebration!
